重庆体彩网oudspeakers are very重庆体彩网 significant. 重庆体彩网oudspeaker design is pathetically behind every other aspect of sound engineering. 重庆体彩网hat's why they all sound so different.

重庆体彩网icrophones sound different too, but mics that are designed to be accurate sound very much more similar to each other. 重庆体彩网urely electronic equipment, when designed to be accurate, sounds extremely similar. 重庆体彩网ut loudspeakers...? 重庆体彩网hat's going wrong?

重庆体彩网here are three main ways in which loudspeakers differ...

  • 重庆体彩网requency response
  • 重庆体彩网istortion
  • '重庆体彩网oominess'

重庆体彩网f for instance your mix has important low bass content, but is lacking in upper bass, then it will sound great on big loudspeakers, but small loudspeakers will lose an important component of the overall sound.

重庆体彩网f you mix on monitors that are clean, then when you play it back on loudspeakers that distort (and they all do to some extent), then it will lose clarity. 重庆体彩网f clarity was important to your sound, whoops - you've just lost it.

重庆体彩网重庆体彩网oominess is significant. 重庆体彩网f you monitor on loudspeakers that have a tight and controlled bass end, you will be inclined to mix to that advantage. 重庆体彩网ut on typical loudspeakers your mix will be hopelessly unfocussed in the bass.

重庆体彩网重庆体彩网he acoustics of the listening environment are also important. 重庆体彩网n your studio you are probable sitting midway between the monitors, in the near field. 重庆体彩网ou have ideal listening conditions.

重庆体彩网ut how many people will have a similar environment? 重庆体彩网ardly any. 重庆体彩网o your mix has to be able to cope with kitchen acoustics, car acoustics, in-ear acoustics. 重庆体彩网ll of them very dissimilar to near field monitoring. (重庆体彩网hich raises the question of why we do it that way.)

重庆体彩网ars have the additional problem of background noise. 重庆体彩网ny component of your mix that is lower in level than the background noise will be lost.

重庆体彩网art of the solution is to have a variety of monitoring systems in your studio. 重庆体彩网our favorite pair of nearfields, yes. 重庆体彩网ut you should have distant monitors too. 重庆体彩网nd if you can gut a portable stereo and use it for its speakers, so much the better. (重庆体彩网t would be nice if it were possible to buy such a thing pre-gutted.)

重庆体彩网ix from the sweet spot yes, but also listen from around the room. 重庆体彩网isten from outside of the room too - often that will tell you something about your mix that you didn't know before.
